Accommodation for Preah Khan Kompong Svay? Koh Ker?

Preah Khan Kompong Svay

BeTreed is an excellent accommodation option for the Preah Khan Kompong Svay and the Koh Ker temples here in Cambodia.

Preah Khan

One of the last of the “remote” temples, and one where you might not find hoards of tour-group tourists, Preah Khan of Kompong Svay, or Prasath Bakan as the locals call it, is actually the largest in terms of size. By size, I mean the walled enclosure is larger than Angkor Wat. You might be the only tourist there and you can still explore to your heart’s content, climb rocks and feel like you are just discovering this ancient structure for yourself. See this article in The Times by James Stewart to find out more.

BeTreed is an excellent accommodation option for Preah Khan. Currently there are a couple of homestays right near the temple if you want a village experience. There is also a concrete guesthouse in the district town 30km away which may or may not be open. And there is BeTreed. We are about 1 hour’s drive from Preah Khan. Maybe you like to experience staying in our treehouse, “The Monkey Pod,” or  one of the more grounded stilt houses? If you want to be intrepid, there is a 22km jungle road for motorbikes and mountain bikes, otherwise the village road works well. Coming from Phnom Penh or Siem Reap it makes sense to visit the temple on the way in or out.

Koh Ker

Koh Ker Temple is another less visited temple but as tourists are looking for more solitude, there are more tourists travelling further to visit here (I know that doesn’t make sense but is in essence what is happening). It is different to any of the other temples and it is part of a large complex of many smaller sites. Guesthouse accommodation in Koh Ker can be found at Sreyong town-very close to the temple complex and there are at least 2 or 3 options. Unfortunately, due to a couple of fires during the dry season of 2018/2019 which burned two of the main bridges between Sreyong and BeTreed, we no longer have a direct road to Koh Ker and the trip takes about 3 hours instead of the previous 1.5. Sad. The upside is that the new recommended route passes Preah Khan.
